US Ambassador Matthew Bryza Meets With Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev

BAKU. April 25, 2011: Today, Safar Abiyev, Azerbaijani Defense Minister, met with the US ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza, reported the Turan News Agency. “The parties discussed the course and prospects of military cooperation between Azerbaijan and the US and touched upon the issue of determining the new dates of postponed joint military exercises "Regional response 2011," reported the Agency referring to the press service of the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry.

The press service reported that the parties also exchanged views on security of Azerbaijani energy infrastructure.

 

On April 20, the Azerbaijani media had reported that the Azerbaijani government unilaterally cancelled the joint military exercises with the US military.  The Azerbaijani media had speculated that the cancellation of the joint military exercises was the way the Azerbaijani government was expressing the frustration over the pro-democracy agenda of the United States in the region (Azerireport).
