Republicans Initiative Group Will Campaign Against Constitutional Changes in Azerbaijan PDF Print E-mail

January 7, 2009: Musavat party have decided to establish an initiative group in order to campaign against the constitutional changes.  One of those constitutional changes is about abolishing the term limits for the presidency in Azerbaijan.  That provision is aimed at allowing the incumbent president ilham Aliyev to run for the presidency for the third term.  The opposition views this constitutional change as a gateway for establishing a de-facto monarchy in Azerbaijan with a life-term president.

The press-service of Musavat reported that the initiative group against the constitutional changes will campaign during the referendum and has already requested airing time from the  Azeri Public TV in accordance with the Election Code of Azerbaijan and other legal provisions providing opportunities for the initiative groups participating in election and referendum campaigns.  The referendum is scheduled for March 18, 2009.

The initiative group of musavat will be called Republicans and will include a number of other political parties and NGOs, willing to participate in this campaign. The constituent assembly of this initiative group will be held soon.  Musavat plans to establish branch campaign offices of the Republicans Initiative Group in Baku, Ganja, Sumgayit and several other regions.

The Republicans Initiative Group will maintain close relations with other opposition organizations (Azerireport).
