BAKU. May 28, 2011: Today, the pro-democracy community of Azerbaijan marked the 93rd anniversary of the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR). ADR was established on May 28, 1918. It was the first independent country of Azerbaijan after the collapse of the Russian empire and the first republic in the Oriental world. ADR granted universal suffrage to all the Azerbaijani citizens including women in 1919, ahead of many countries in Europe.
The anniversary of the ADR is an official holiday in Azerbaijan. However, the Azerbaijani government has been continuously downplaying the importance of this holiday since 1993 in a jealous attempt of the ruling Aliyev clan to disregard Mahammad Amin Rasulzade, the founder of the ADR, and exalt Heydar Aliyev’s role as a “founding father” of Azerbaijan.
The Public Chamber of the Azerbaijani opposition held a rally at the monument of Mahammmad Amin Rasulzade in Novkhani, Baku to mark the Republic Day. Below are the photos from the event.
