BAKU. April 2, 2011: Today, the Public Chamber uniting the opposition forces held a mass action of protest in the downtown area of Baku. Click here, here, and here for video coverage. The Ministry of Interior reported that 350 opposition activists participated in the actions of protest. However, the independent observers and the media reported hundreds of protesters. At least couple thousand protesters participated in the protest action.
The protesters managed to break into the Fountain Square, the announced place of the opposition rally despite the fact that the police forced had encircled the place. The police arrested about 50 members from PFPA, and 50 members from Musavat. Tens of people representing other political parties, civic organizations, and media were arrested by the police. The police reports several injured policemen, broken windows and destroyed police cars by the protesters. However, the opposition forces claim that the responsibility for violence and vandalism rests on the police and the police provocateurs. Below are the photos from the event:
