BAKU. December 18, 2010: This morning local citizens of Nardaran district, 30 km away from Baku, have staged the demonstration to protest at ban on wearing hijab (Muslim headscarf) at schools. About 200 people chanted "We’ll Die, But Wear Hijab!" and strongly condemned yesterday’s program on Azeri State TV Channel criticizing hijab. Click here for video
The demonstrators, the practicing Muslims protesting the imposition of secular restrictions on wearing hijab in public schools, urged all Muslims and mosques to start collection of signatures in defense of hijab.
The protesters burned the pictures of Misir Mardanov, the Minister of Education of Azerbaijan. The police did not interfere with the protesters. Earlier, two days ago, the Nardaran residents held a bigger protest rally showing the muscles of political Islam to the Azerbaijani government.
