Photo-Session: Mirza Sakit Finally Released From Jail! |

BAKU. April 9, 2009: On April 9, the jail administration finally released Sakit Zahidov, better known as Mirza Sakit, a satiric journalist, who was imprisoned on fabricated drug possession charges in 2006 and sentenced to three years in prison. Mirza Sakit was arrested for his sharp satiric poems, in which he criticized the Aliyev government's rampant corruption and anti-democratic practices.
Three months before the time of his official release, Mirza Sakit fell under the recently declared amnesty of the Azeri parliament. Although the amnesty was meant as a Novruz Holiday goodwill, the jail administration delayed the release of Mirza Sakit from jail until April 9.
